Phase – I

General Awareness (most scoring)

  • Purchased past 6 months’ (6 months before the date of the exam, for both Phase I and Phase II) Kiran Prakashan’s Banking and Current Affairs magazines online on Magzter.com for Rs. 10 each. This was the most concise Current Affairs magazine I found on the net. It was just a 35-40 page booklet every month and covered almost everything required for RBI Grade B. I strongly recommend preparing Current Affairs from this magazine over any other source.
    • Note : This magazine is available online only through Magzter and can be viewed only by logging into Magzter after purchasing a copy of the magazine. PDFs for this magazine are not available anywhere as they do not allow anyone to download.
    • The only problem is that it gets published with a time lag and hence closer to the date of the exam I had to supplement it with Affairscloud weekly CA pdf to fill the gap.
    • Note : Release of this magazine has become erratic this year and hence I would not recommend going for this anymore. Upon checking with my RBI batch-mates, I came to know that Affairscloud monthly CA POCKET (weekly magazine is free and monthly is paid) or GKToday magazines are good enough for RBI Grade B -> Kiran Prakashan magazines are now being published regularly and hence this Note stands cancelled. I would recommend studying from Kiran Prakashan over any other magazine because of its concise nature.
  • Made notes from each section of the magazine in MS Word and revised these many times (notes from economy and banking related sections are also useful for Phase-II). I did not prepare my notes month-wise. I prepared them topic-wise. It was a single MS Word document for all the months combined, containing all the important points in brief under appropriate headings
  • Note : Study of any magazine for GA should necessarily be complemented with daily reading of at least one newspaper (I read The Hindu). Notes need not be made from the newspaper. Just a general reading, to be aware of happenings within and outside the country, should suffice
  • Sample GA notes for Phase – I attached below. This also contains a list of important topics that need to be covered from Affairscloud monthly CA POCKET pdf

Quant, Logical Reasoning and English

  • I first solved 2-3 free Phase – I mock tests (details given below under ‘Test Series’ header), without studying any material or looking up any videos
  • These tests helped me identify topics I was weak at (for example, I couldn’t solve syllogisms initially)
  • Next, I learnt tricks to solve these particular type of questions from the internet (for example, using Venn diagrams to solve syllogisms)
  • Attempted further free mock tests for practice

Strategy for attempting Phase – I exam

  • First 30 mins : solved all General Awareness and English Language questions
  • Next 45 mins : solved Reasoning questions with the sole aim of clearing sectional cutoff
    • solved only short questions like those on Inequalities, Syllogisms, Distances and Directions, Blood Relations etc
    • avoided lengthy questions like those on Input Output, Arrangements, Floor/Building puzzles etc
    • avoided tricky questions like those on Cause and Effect, Assumption and Statement etc
  • Next 45 mins : solved as many Quantitative Aptitude questions as possible
  • Time spent on Reasoning and Quant varied by 5 mins depending on whether I had been able to solve enough Reasoning questions or not

Test Series

  • Did not join any paid test series for Phase-I but solved almost all the freely available mocks online
  • Free mocks I attempted were those of Practicemock, Oliveboard, Ixambee, Gradeup etc (Ixambee offers about 10 free mocks!)
  • Quality of all these tests was good enough for me to prepare a strategy for time management and know which areas I needed to improve upon

    Hello Sir,

I am currently working in a bank(engineering background) and also preparing for RBI Grade B, I wasn’t in touch with the books since joining the bank i.e. past 4 years. Now i start preparing from this month atleast 3 hours a day and 1 daily mock test. But my concern is i am only getting approx 35-40 marks from 100 (Percentile 70 to 80), do you think that this will improve further with regular practice, as i am getting disappointed with this and sometimes think of leaving preparation.

Do you think i have enough time to crack RBI grade B exam?

      Hi Deepak,
I am assuming you are solving mocks for Phase – II (since the mock is for 100 marks). If that’s the case, the score will improve with time as you gather more current affairs based facts. I would advice you to identify topics where you are scoring less.
      1. If scoring less on conceptual questions – make note of all concepts/terms you come across and study these from sources like Investopedia/Arthapedia or other standard books
      2. If scoring less on factual questions – check whether you have compiled facts from all necessary sources like Economic Survey, Budget (Interim), a reliable current affairs module etc. If not, finishing this exercise would increase your score. Also make it a habit of noting down any new fact you come across while solving mocks
      3. If scoring less on factual questions, but these facts were present in your notes – the solution would be to periodically revise your notes so that you retain the facts

In case you were asking about Phase – I, remember that GA is the most scoring section. If you are scoring less in this, follow advice mentioned in points 2 and 3 above. If scoring less in other 3 topics, identify areas where you are scoring less and learn tricks to solve those kind of questions from the net. In Phase – I post on the blog, I have put up a list of topics which I found easier to solve, and hence more scoring. Try solving those questions first.

Don’t get disheartened on receiving a low score. You have sufficient time to improve upon it and clear the exam. Even the notification for this year’s exam is not out yet!!

Hi Mr Shreerang.I have a question regarding QA and Reasoning.Does one require to practice CAT Level questions? Also, what is the level of difficulty of these two sections in RBI Grade B?

    Like

    1. Shreerang's avatar

      Hi Anshika,

      1. The QA and LR questions are not as tough as those asked in CAT. But to answer your first question, although it is not ‘required’ to practice CAT level questions, there’s no harm in doing so if you have access to good quality CAT modules (particularly for topics you are weak at). Personally, I first solved free Phase – I mock tests, identified topics I was weak at, and then practiced these particular topics from CAT modules

      2. As a measure of ‘difficulty’, I classified QA and LR questions as ‘time-consuming’ and ‘less time-consuming’. For LR, which I was less comfortable with as compared to QA, I solved only the ‘less time-consuming’ questions to clear the sectional cutoff and completely ignored the ‘time-consuming’ ones. For QA, I first solved the ‘less time-consuming’ questions and then solved the time-consuming ones to increase my overall score. List of topics I found ‘less time-consuming’ has been mentioned in the Phase – I post on the blog

Does Kiran prakashan’s magazine come with a lag of 2 months? Because I was going through its April edition and found Feb current affairs with a few happenings from march.
If this is so, from when should I prepare it to cover 6 months of current affairs?
    Thanks for sharing your strategy:-)

Hi, Kiran Prakashan magazines do come with a time lag of 2 months. Thanks for reminding me of this. I will make necessary additions to relevant post on the blog. To answer your question, I covered the latest 4 Kiran Prakashan magazines (i.e up until 2 months before the exam). For the second last month before the exam, I covered Ixambee free monthly magazine. And for the last month, I covered weekly Affairscloud magazines. But do note that Ixambee and Affairscloud magazines contain a lot of unnecessary stuff, and you can safely skip points you find irrelevant from exam point of view (having got an idea of what is relevant by studying Kiran Prakashan magazines and solving mock tests)

yes, these magazines along with study of govt and RBI released docs like Financial Stability Report, Budget, Economic Survey etc should suffice. However, do note that Kiran Prakashan magazines are available after a lag of 2 months. So far the last 2 months before exam, I had referred to Ixambee monthly magazine (for 2nd last month) and Affairscloud weekly magazines (for last month)

Thanks Subhash. I did not study any material for Quant, LR or English. Began by practicing from free mocks, identified weak areas, and THEN studied only those from the net (you may refer to books like R S Agrawal). Once I got to know tricks to solve these questions, I began practicing again by solving free mocks.

From what I remember, English was not too tough. I did not prepare for English. But I would recommend reading a lot (newspapers and magazines) and a lot of practice to be comfortable with English

As you mentioned for GA, AC or GKtoday is good. I was following Bankersadda module. Are they good enough too or should I switch to any one of the above two.

    1. Shreerang's avatar

Hi Vishal, not sure about the quality of Bankersadda modules because I haven’t gone through them and also because none of the batchmates I have spoken to so far have recommended it. If you can switch to either AC or GKToday, that would be great. But if you have already made notes from BA, I would suggest comparing any 1 month’s magazines from BA and AC/GKtoday just to ensure that BA is not leaving out any important topic altogether. If all topics are covered, I think BA should be good enough to follow too. The important thing here is to revise the collected facts again and again.

    Dear Sir,

First of all thank you very much for taking time out of your busy schedule to help young aspirants like me. I have 2 questions/querry.

    1. I am just 20 years old as of now and will be eligible for RBI Grade B in 2020. But I have started preparing from now.I am from Commerce Background with 90+ score in 12th class.I have started reading Indian Financial System by Bharti Pathak and books like Indian Economy by Ramesh Singh and FM by Prasana Chandra is also in my to do list. I am doing Quant and Reasoning on regular basis as well. But I am bit confused about GA. My exam will be almost after 12 to 14 months from now. So should I start preparing notes on GA from now on or should I wait for few more months. Although I am reading Kiran Prakash monthly digest regularly. I need your Input on this.

    2. Do I have any kind of disadvantage for being so young and not having any kind of work experience. Because I have heard that they prefer experienced campaigners in Interview. Also I am not from any fancy college or school. Does this have any disadvantage? Because I will face some IIT/IIM alumni.

Also please let me know if you have kind of suggestions given the time span I have. Anything extra I can do?

Hi Uday, please find answers to your queries below –
      1. you may want to refer to my Quora answer on this here – https://qr.ae/TWtJNo
      2. No need to make GA notes for now. But do start reading at least 2 good newspapers (1 general + 1 business) daily. I would recommend The Hindu (at least the economy related Editorials and Business pages) and LiveMint. While reading, try and understand what each article is trying to convey by looking up unknown terms on the net
      3. GA notes from a good monthly magazine to be prepared for 5-6 months before the date of the exam (questions asked are generally from 3-4 months before exam date)
      4. No, you are not at any disadvantage. If anything, you would be at an advantage because you managed to reach the Interview at a young age and by competing with some of the best minds in the country. My own poor score in the interview despite having a ‘good’ background is enough to tell you that they do not value these ‘fancy’ tags much.
      5. Also, you would have better chances of reaching the topmost positions in RBI by joining at a young age. So face your interview with confidence and you will surely score well

    Like

    1. Shreerang's avatar

      Hi Richa,
I think it is difficult to study a language for an exam. It has to come naturally. And for that to happen we need to read a lot in that language. So I would suggest that you read at least 2 good English newspapers everyday and watch videos in English like RSTV’s ‘Big picture’, so that the language comes naturally to you. Other than that, the only way to improve score is to practice a lot. Try and identify the kind of questions you are unable to answer and then look those type of questions up on the net for practice.
Also, if you feel that you are still not scoring well in English, try and practice harder for Quant and LR so that you can make up for an average score in English

      2. I don’t recommend studying NCERTs for Finance or even Economics. For Finance, you can refer to some other basic book (I used NCFM module). For economics, either Sriram IAS notes or Ramesh Singh would be a better choice.

      3. If you are a complete beginner in Economics, then you may have to see all the 85 videos by Mrunal. But I would recommend studying Sriram IAS notes first so that you have a basic idea, and then watch Mrunal videos for topics you find difficult.

      1. I don’t think RBI will ask you about your employment status now itself. That will happen after you qualify for the Interview. In my opinion, you should disclose accurate information wherever asked. Because after selection, police verification takes place and a detailed background check is also performed. If it is found out that you had not disclosed something, it might cause trouble.
      2. Sorry but I have no idea about this. Please check in RBI notification or contact RBI Services Board for this.

I went through current affairs magazines of Affairs Cloud and there are 2 versions of it. One is Current Affairs Pocket PDF (as you mentioned in the post) and one is Current Affairs Study PDF. There is huge difference in the content of these 2, Pocket PDF(60-70 pages) and Study PDF(250 pages approx). From what I have seen, the Study PDF contains details of events given as one-liners in pocket pdf and also contains extra things. Hello dear,

I will be appearing for Grade b 2020.I have made a strategy for the same.I will be starting my preparation from dec this year, and according to my planning,i would complete phase 2 till may 2020 that is in 6 months.I would be preparing for sbi po 2020 as well along with rbi grade b 2020,so this way rbi grade b phase 1 topics would be automatically covered frm my sbi po preparation itself.See,i have thought of preparing for phase 2 in this way:

    45 min for esi(static)
    45 min for finance(static)
    30 min for management(static)
    30 min for gov schemes
    30 min for essay topics
30 min for latest burning topics(current trending topics)
1hr for daily current affairs from affairs cloud daily update(i would be doing it on a daily basis rather than monthly pdf compilation)
1 hr for reading The hindu daily.

I have planned this way so that i would cover all topics on a daily basis(sunday no preparation).
And apart from that 3.5 hrs for sbi po phase 1 quant,lr etc topics.

So total daily 9 hrs except sunday.

Now my question to you is do u think that i should take only 1 subject from esi, finance, management daily or i should study like that i mentioned above??

According to my planning,if everything goes as planned,i would complete phase 2 from esi, finance and management by may.and after that will do revision…I want that when notification gets released next year,i would then only revise phase 2..

    Kindly suggest…thanks bro.

    Hi Shreerang,

In some of the mock tests, I find questions on minute details about banking and the RBI. Is it the same in the actual exam too ?

    1. Shreerang's avatar

Hi, that would depend upon what you consider as ‘minute details’. Please give a few examples so that I can better answer your query

I had same query. For instance questions like these –>
        1) In a big relief to home buyers, the GST Council on February 24 slashed tax rates on under-construction flats, affordable housing. The GST on under construction house properties without input tax credit (ITC) has been reduced to how much percent?
        .
        2) GST council expanded the scope of affordable housing to those costing up to ______and measuring 60 sq. metre in metros and 90 sq. metre in non-metro cities.
        .
Do we have to remember such details from GST council meetings ?

    Hello Sir,
    1. How many months current affairs should we study?
    2. For schemes how many months Vision IAS monthly capsule should we cover?

    Like

    1. Shreerang's avatar

Hi Abhishek, 5-6 months’ current affairs before the date of the exam should suffice. For schemes, studying monthly Vision capsule is not required. Vision released a compilation of schemes every year before UPSC CSE prelims. Use that.

Hi Gokul, I faced a similar problem with Reasoning. Please go to Phase I tab of the blog and check out how I dealt with Reasoning. You may want to follow a similar approach. That and a lot of practice will help you gain confidence in solving Quant and LR problems.

    Hello sir,
I had clicked on the kiran magazine’s link and there I checked that no edition after april 2020 has been released.
Do they release it in a bulk or they have stopped publishing on magzter ?

Hi Aatmika, as mentioned under Phase I, the magazine is published after a time lag. I am not sure if they have halted publication due to COVID 19. You may want to refer to Affairscloud monthly pocket pdf in the meantime.

    1. Shreerang's avatar

Hi Satyam, sorry for the late reply. Yes, this is more than sufficient. Just make sure that you are able to retain all the important stuff for the exam. Too many facts would make it difficult for you to memorise. You might want to cut down on one magazine if it’s difficult to remember so much.

Hi Jay, there are many people who prepare for RBI Grade B after clearing SSC CGL. My understanding is that you will have sufficient time to prepare along with the job. But if you are able to start preparing now itself, alongside SSC CGL prep, that would be the best thing to do.

Hi Sahaj, sorry no idea about release of notification. For Current Affairs, Affairscloud monthly pocket pdf would be a good alternative. I haven’t studied Banking Services Chronicles magazine, so won’t be able to comment on its quality or sufficiency.

Hello sir, for Phase 1 is following Anuj jindal’s Spotlight monthly current affairs magazine sufficient enough? It is rather exhaustive with around 200 pages. Sir, can you please confirm the same.
Or is it wise to stick to Affairs Cloud daily current affairs for Phase 1?

    Like

    1. Shreerang's avatar

HI Debarshee, I did not refer to Spotlight, so wont be able to comment on it’s quality or sufficiency. Also, daily current affairs is not required in my opinion. Studying from monthly magazines like Affairscloud monthly pocket pdf or GKToday or Kiran Prakashan (if they publish) should suffice.

In my opinion, for now, it would be better for you to focus on and enjoy college life. You can worry about placements and jobs in your final year. If you still wish to start preparing now, try and finish off static topics like Finance, Management, basic economics etc first. Then practice topics from Quant and LR that you find difficult.

Hi Riya, if you are preparing for CAT, that should cover Quant, LR and English for RBI Grade B. Just make sure you practice solving a few RBI Grade B mocks as well. Don’t just rely on solving CAT mocks. Preparing simultaneously for both should not be an issue.

    Dear sir,
I aim only the cut off of QA for RBI exam 2022. Cut off will be 7.5 So on a safer side I aim maximum 10 marks.
I have no basics in maths, therefore approaching every topic is not suitable for me because it’s a trap for many candidates.

Can you please suggest some topics which I can score this target? So that I can give maximum time & energy towards it.
Nb: You people are really amazing because you spend time to maintain a website for us. Surely, you will be paid for your time and efforts. GOD bless you.

    Sir,
As RBI is asking more in depth questions from current affairs. I am not able to gauge how much deep should I go in a particular news (Mainly the numbers). Also, the static part related to the news how deep should I go in it? For example, If there is news that fall under MTSS, I would read about MTSS from RBI faqs section but there is so much information and technicalities that it takes times. How to gauge that depth? I am struggling in it.
Lastly, I thank you for your effort to make a platform like this to help your fellow juniors. ❤️
